Utak leírása Römerland Carnuntum bike route - Enzersdorf/Fischa variant

Vienna - Albern - Mannswörth - Schwechat - Schwadorf - Klein-Neusiedl - Enzersdorf/F - Arbesthal - Göttlesbrunn - Höflein - Scharndorf - Petronell/Carnuntum - Bad Deutsch-Altenburg - Hainburg/Donau

The Römerland Carnuntum bike route starts at one of the oldest and most historically significant places in Vienna, directly above the ruins of the former Roman camp “Vindobona” – Hoher Markt. From here, it goes along the Donaukanal bike path to Neualbern.

Just before Schwechat, the bike route splits into 2 variants: a more direct and shorter variant goes via Fischamend and the airport to Petronell-Carnuntum, while the present, more leisurely and longer one goes via Schwadorf, the wine villages Arbesthal, Göttlesbrunn, and Höflein to Petronell-Carnuntum.

After passing through Schwechat, the route runs past fields and meadows, always with the largest airport in Austria, Vienna Schwechat, in sight. For those who have always wanted to know how an airport works, a detour to the visitor center of the airport is just the right thing.

A first opportunity to refresh yourself is at the Schwadorf bike resting place “Zum Rastplatzl.” The bike route then leads directly into the Arbesthal hilly landscape. In Arbesthal, you enter the wonderful world of wine, which accompanies you all the way to Höflein. Here, you have the opportunity to take a break at the Höflein bike resting place "Römerblick," or use one of the many options for refreshments.

Just before Petronell-Carnuntum, the impressive Heidentor, probably the best-known Roman monument in Austria, can be seen. It quickly becomes clear that you are cycling through the largest archaeological landscape in Austria. In Petronell-Carnuntum, there is the top excursion destination Roman city Carnuntum with the Roman district and the Petronell amphitheater. Here, the fascinating world of the Romans is brought back to life.

The journey into antiquity continues to Bad Deutsch-Altenburg, where a visit to the newly renovated Carnuntinum Museum, Austria’s largest Roman museum, is worthwhile. In Bad Deutsch-Altenburg, you can take a break at the bike resting place “Zum Marc Aurel.” Near the Danube, the tour finally leads into the scenic medieval town of Hainburg an der Donau. Impressive city gates, the castle on Schlossberg and mighty city walls recall the glorious past under King Ottokar II of Bohemia. Tip: A museum worth seeing is located in the Wienertor, the largest medieval city gate in Europe.

If you feel like it, you can make stops along the Danube and read sayings by Marcus Aurelius. The Römerland Carnuntum tour ends at the ship landing stage in Hainburg. From Hainburg, you can also take the train back to Vienna.
