Burg Gars

Hegy, Kilátóhely

Leírás

Gars is one of the oldest castles in Austria. It was built in the 11th century and still stood in the style of the old rampart castles. However, we can only speculate about its origins.

History of the castle

The castle, which towers over the twin town of Gars-Thunau, served the Babenbergs as one of their oldest bases and even as a residence for a time. The Babenbergs established one of their seats here, although the "Garser Babenberg period" only lasted a few decades, as castellans were appointed to administer the castle under Leopold III. The Gars burgraves, who were related to the Kuenringers, developed into an important dynasty in the following period. Gars was an important base for the colonization of the Waldviertel.

The three-storey Renaissance wing next to the medieval castle ruins has been partially restored. Special sights of the castle are the north tower, which has been accessible since 2017 and whose viewing platform offers a breathtaking view of a centuries-old cultural landscape, and the Gothic Gertrude Church on the southern slope.

Festivals & events

The current entrance to the castle is located just behind the former drawbridge. The fascinating surroundings of Gars Castle offer an exceptional setting for unforgettable celebrations. Whether wedding celebrations, christenings, company parties, Christmas or birthday parties, in summer the large inner courtyard is used as an atmospheric open-air stage.

The unique atmosphere of the thousand-year-old castle walls and the unique acoustics are still part of the magic of this extraordinary natural setting. For up to 1,250 guests, opera can be experienced here in the open air in its most original form, without any amplification.
