Hangenstein natural monument a jewel in the Thaya valley
The approx. 1 km long section of river on the south-eastern outskirts of Karlstein/Thaya was declared a natural monument due to its ecological diversity. This was achieved in December 2008 on the initiative of the Friends of the Thaya Valley association.
River nature trail
A river nature trail with currently 16 information boards and a small herb garden including an insect hotel was also set up in this area to help the local population better understand the area. On a walk across the flood protection dam, you have the opportunity to learn more about the water, aquatic animals, wild herbs, the "legend of the Hangenstein" and much more.
This walk is also signposted as a hiking trail (No. 54 - themed trail "Naturdenkmal Hangenstein").
