Pfarrkirche Hl. Michael

Templom

Leírás

The church was first mentioned in a document in 1147 and is recognizable as a fortified church. Parts of the tower originate from a former castle complex and are therefore older than the first documentary mention. In 1367, the right of patronage was granted to the Thiersteiners and the nave was built as a Protestant church around 1580 under the Geyers - the peculiar diamond vault is a good example of the stylistic uncertainty in sacred buildings at this time. The remarkable epitaph of Bernhard Haydn zum Dorf auf Hainperg from 1589 and the accompanying terracotta funerary shield also date from the Protestant period - one of the few surviving examples of the use of this material in funerary sculpture (see Schallaburg). The presbytery owes its creation (1745) to the proceeds from the sale of the Geyer copper coffins from the church crypt - a less than reverent approach to the former patrons of the church. The high altarpiece, which depicts the church saint St. Michael, was painted by the Nazarene Theodor Petter, the Stations of the Cross by students of Kremser Schmidt. With its Romanesque-Gothic style and 37 m high tower, the church is a landmark visible from afar. There is also a spacious crypt beneath the parish church.
